Swindon Therapy Centre (STC) for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a self-help group, which has been providing a range of holistic therapies to improve the quality of life and independence of people with MS and other neurological conditions in the Swindon and surrounding 35 mile radius since 1983. It is also a member of the National MS Therapy Centres and is committed to working with the healthcare and business community to achieve its aims. It is completely self-funded, receiving donations for therapies from members, whenever possible, the balance coming from our own fund-raising activities, as well as donations or one-off grants from individuals and companies. STC is mainly volunteer-led to ensure costs are kept as low as possible, with 2 part-time staff (Manager and Deputy).
Therapies include: High Dosage Oxygen Therapy (HDOT – breathing oxygen through a mask in a pressurised chamber), physiotherapy and pilates; reiki, reflexology, Indian head therapy, information and advice, as well as access to counselling sessions.
STC supports sufferers, families and carers by offering these vital therapies which all help manage their day-to-day symptoms, thus promoting a positive attitude and the ethos of self-help, given in a caring, friendly and safe environment with like-minded people.
In December 2008 STC started treating under-18 year olds with conditions such as Cerebral Palsy and brain injuries, for the first time and it is this area which we are now wishing to develop further.
Membership has trebled since 2004 and is now over 140 members. Our present premises are very cramped with no room to expand, difficult to access with no designated disabled parking, and poorly located, discouraging potential beneficiaries from using the facilities. Our ‘Moving Soon’ Appeal is to purchase larger premises which will accommodate more people and house a larger double lock oxygen chamber and following purchase, the premises will be extended and totally refurbished ready for occupation in the autumn of 2009.
